Maryland Metals Positions Itself for the Future with Herr-Voss Stamco's Latest Multi-Blanking Technology August 23, 2004 Herr-Voss Stamco is pleased to announce a recent contract award from Maryland Metals, a premier toll processor of aluminum, pre-painted steel and surface critical stainless steel. The multi-blanking line will be the first with both the CNC Compu-Set® Leveler and the CNC Compu-Cut® Slitter; two innovations that significantly improve the up-time and the quality of both the slitting and leveling processes. The line will run coils from 12" to 60" wide at a maximum speed of 350 FPM with a material thickness range of .018" to .105" and a maximum yield of 60,000 PSI. The line will produce a minimum mult width of 5". The leveler incorporates a proprietary arrangement for precise adjustment. This feature, plus the fact that the rolls are positioned by a high performance drive with encoder feedback, enables automatic, repeatable calibration. The slitter is a true computer numeric controlled machine. The operator simply enters the desired parameters, including clearances, and the machine sets itself; accurately and quickly. Setups are complete before the next coil is threaded. The High Speed Shear with the remotely adjustable knife clearance provides burr-free sheets. Vinyl and paper handling equipment along with the Air Float Mult Stacker ensure the sensitive product is stacked evenly and quickly without the risk of damage. Ken McAvoy, president of Maryland Metals, stated: "Time is money if you're a processor; you need to be running 40 out of 40 hours. You need to cut down your labor costs, and you need to improve your quality. We say we are world-class, and we put our money back into buying world-class equipment. We can't compete on a labor basis with Mexico and China. So we have to make sure that we can produce coils into blanks with the best quality." The line is scheduled for operation in the summer of 2005. Herr-Voss Stamco is a leading manufacturer of slitting, cut-to-length, tension leveling, precision roller leveling and other coil processing equipment.
